Just Kids and Little Women

Also- I read Patti Smith’s “Just Kids” while on break in NYC (I really recommend everyone to read this charming piece!) and found a passage where Patti Smith references “Little Women,” Then I read Little Women, and of course, like a lot of really young girls, I was very taken with Jo - Jo being the writer and the misfit.” This motif of “Little Women” is fairly embedded in “Just Kids,” and Smith’s refusal of embracing the social norms of what it means to be a women is very similar to that of Jo’s, and the same gender social norm pressures can be made to comment on Robert (Smith’s lover and best friend) and his feminine mannerisms (which at times are similar to that of Alcott’s when talking about Laurie.) –just thought it was an interesting take and more relevant example for our generation.
